We’re all understandably dealing with tough times right now. With that in mind, you might be wanting to learn more about how to boost your immune system. Here’s more information about your immune system including supplements and foods you can use to make it stronger than ever.
What is the Immune System?
It’s difficult to briefly explain what the immune system is, but I’ll do my best. Generally speaking, the immune system is your body’s built-in way of fighting off all types of sicknesses and diseases. So, how does the immune system work? It basically protects your body from anything coming in that this system thinks is harmful. It also separates the “good” from “bad” parts of your body, ensuring it doesn’t harm the healthy parts.
Think of your body as a castle. Your immune system is a large group of soldiers that protecting this castle against enemies (illnesses). Unfortunately, not everyone has a strong immune system.
How to Strengthen Your Immune System
Many things make up how weak or strong your immune system is. Considering that, many people deal with immune system disorders. If you have this type of disorder, your immune system works against you. Unfortunately, lots of people live with immune-related problems including those with asthma, eczema, diabetes, arthritis, and lupus.
You’ll be glad to know that there are several proven ways to strengthen your immune system. I hate being sick at any time of the year. With that in mind, I’ve put together lots of helpful tips to help you learn how to boost your immune system.
Eat Immune-Boosting Foods
Don’t feel too worried if you’re someone who doesn’t have a strong immune system. There are plenty of awesome immune-boosting foods that make staying healthy an easy task to take care of.
Eat Citrus Fruits
There’s nothing like a tangy fruit as a delicious and healthy snack. You’ll also be glad to know that citrus fruits are great for boosting the strength of your immune system. These types of fruits contain lots of vitamin C, which is one of the best vitamins for immune system strength.
Consume More Garlic
One of the best additions to any meal is that of garlic. This ingredient pairs well with a nice pasta or a meat-based dish. Whatever you prefer it with, you’ll be happy to hear that garlic is a well-known ingredient that helps lower your immune system. Also, garlic can help lower your blood pressure.
Include Yogurt Into Your Diet
Another one of the best foods to skyrocket your immune system’s power is yogurt. This food is full of healthy nutrients your body needs. It’s also a great source of protein and an awesome immune-boosting food. If you want specific proof why and enjoy nice, technical reads, check out the write-up on how yogurt boosts the immune system by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Chicken is Great for Your Immune System
If you’re like most people, you remember having a nice, warm bowl of chicken noodle soup when you were sick. Therefore, it’s understandable to think that chicken soup doesn’t help you when you don’t feel well. However, your parents were right about this one. Chicken doesn’t only taste great, but it’s also good for making your immune system stronger. Whether it’s in a soup, in a sandwich, or enjoyed on its own, chicken is great immune-boosting food.

Not everyone wants to make lots of changes to their diets. If you’re looking for an easy way to avoid being sick as often, you’ll want to check out immune system supplements. Here are a few of the best supplements for a stronger immune system.

With that said, most people find it hard to eat their respective daily zinc requirements.
You’ll be glad to know that zinc supplements are fairly easy to find and inexpensive. This is great if you find it hard to eat lots of foods rich in zinc.
Another one of the best immune system supplements is vitamin D. This powerhouse has been shown to help your body produce more white blood cells. These types of cells are what continue to make your immune system strong. A study from 2019 actually linked low levels of vitamin D to an increased risk of respiratory infections. It’s easy to find vitamin D supplements almost anywhere.
Activities That Build Your Immunity
Learning how to strengthen your immune system isn’t all about eating the right types of foods. Many activities can make your immune system stronger. Check out these excellent ways to stop feeling sick as often.
One of the best ways to boost your immune system is by exercising. This doesn’t mean you have to spend hours in the gym each day. This website has many great exercise tips. We recently created an awesome piece about how to get more muscle on your arms that I’m super proud of. There are many great ways to exercise including, but not limited to:
- Lifting weights
- Using a treadmill
- Going for a walk
- Playing basketball
Get More Sleep
You’ll see lots of people telling you to “get enough sleep.” However, I don’t feel that this is the best advice. This is because lots of people can function after getting anywhere from four to six hours of sleep each night. As a rule of thumb, healthy adults should be sleeping seven to nine hours each night. If this isn’t happening, try the tips below:
- Avoid caffeine and nicotine before bed (two known stimulants).
- Don’t eat right before bed, especially foods that contain lots of sugar.
- Leave your phone in another room.
During the time you sleep, your body enters into a state of repairing itself. If you aren’t getting the sleep you need, it’s hard for your body (and your immune system) to fix itself.
You’ve heard lots of professionally researched studies and similar types of facts so far. I also don’t think you need them to realize that cigarettes are bad for you, you know this. If you’re still on the fence, I can back this fact up from personal experience. I smoked cigarettes from the time I was 18 until I was 26, over 8 years. During these years of my life, I remember being sick much more often than normal. I hated those mornings of waking up with a runny nose and barely able to smell anything. My and everyone in my family was convinced that I had bad allergies during this point in my life.
What’s crazy is that I didn’t have allergies. I had been dealing with almost a decade of poor health because of my nasty smoking habit. After I made the best decision ever to quit smoking, no more allergies. Also, no more of the 7,000 nasty chemicals found in the average cigarette. No wonder these things weaken your immune system, yuck!
To Wrap Things Up
As you can see, it’s important to have a strong immune system. To avoid being sick throughout the year, you can follow the previously mentioned tips. You’ll be amazed at how much eating healthy, staying active, and choosing the right supplements can help your immune system.
