The question of which supplements to choose will have a different answer depending on your fitness goals. I want to take an approach to answering this question that will help out as many of you as possible. In this post, you will see a list of supplement categories, with specific supplement recommendations for each category.
Let’s get into finding out what supplements you need to take.
- 1 Preworkout:
- 2 Fat Burners:
- 3 Testosterone Boosters:
- 4 Protein:
Preworkouts are supplements that you take before working out. Typically, these supplements are going to do a few main things
- Provide more energy
- Increase endurance
- Increase muscle mass
- Boost mental focus
Preworkouts are for anyone looking to increase their energy and endurance before a workout. Certain preworkouts include muscle building ingredients, to not just give you energy but to increase lean muscle mass.
Good Ingredients to Have in a Preworkout?
Usually, ingredients like caffeine are going to be responsible for giving you more energy and endurance in a preworkout. However, some preworkouts are caffeine-free and use potent vitamin combinations to increase your energy. I’m partial to supplements with caffeine but that’s just my preference.
A wide variety of ingredients can increase muscle in a preworkout supplement. Creatine is one major example of a muscle building ingredient, amino acids are also great for building muscle tissue. Alpha-GPC is an example of an ingredient that is great for boosting mental focus. In addition, this ingredient has been shown to provide stronger muscle contractions which can lead to faster muscle growth.

Fat burners are, of course, supplements made to help you lose fat. Typically these supplements will provide the following benefits:
- Increased fat loss
- Boosted metabolism
- More energy
- Reduced appetite
There are wide varieties of ingredients used in fat burners. These supplements are made for anyone looking to lose weight. These supplements are great for steady weight loss over time, nothing drastic like you would see with a weight loss surgery. However, fat burners combined with an exercise programs will speed up fat loss.
Good Ingredients to Have in a Fat Burner?
Caffeine is a good ingredient to have because it will give you more energy and help reduce cravings for snacks. Green tea extract has been another ingredient proven in studies to aid in weight loss. The amount you need to drink is like six to seven cups a day. It is way better to get this ingredient in a fat burner which gives you a potent amount without having to drink seven cups of tea everyday. 7-keto, raspberry ketones, and coffee bean extract are a few examples of other popular fat burner ingredients.
My advice for easier weight loss is to take small steps. Start by eliminating a snack or two with a healthier choice and working your way up. Trust me, seeing yourself actually start losing fat will be more than enough motivation to gradually replace more junk food and snacks with healthier food options.

Testosterone boosters are great, if used by the right people for the right reasons. The benefits of testosterone booster are typically going to be:
- Increase in testosterone
- More energy
- Increased appetite
- Increased mental focus in the gym
- Slight fat loss
In most cases, testosterone boosters are primarily meant for men over the age of 30, or those with low testosterone. This supplement isn’t for everyone (some find this category to be a little too extreme) but many have found great results with testosterone boosters.
I, myself have used plenty of testosterone boosters in my twenties. Whether or not I should have is debatable but they really helped advance my weightlifting.
Good Ingredients to Have in a Testosterone Booster?
D-Aspartic Acid, Fenugreek Extract, Vitamin B Complex (combination of various B vitamins), and Zinc are all good examples of testosterone boosting ingredients. You can expect to feel more energy, increased hunger, and more intensity in the gym with testosterone boosters.
Testosterone Booster Recommendation: Testo Max
Testo Max is a great supplement in a world filled with weak testosterone boosters. This supplement provides increased testosterone through scientifically studied ingredients including D-Aspartic acid, fenugreek, and tribulus terrestris.
Testosterone boosters are best used for mean that are over the age of 30 or those with low testosterone levels. However, you can use a testosterone booster to increase your energy and improve the rate at which you grow muscle.

Protein is essential for building muscle but is also great for weight loss. Protein keeps you full and is low calorie which are two great things if you want to lose weight. If you are looking to build muscle, you will also love how protein builds new muscle tissue over time.
You can get a large amount of protein from the food that you eat. I recommend using protein powders because of how difficult it can be to get the daily amount of protein that weight lifters need. The general rule of thumb is to aim for getting one gram per pound of body weight. I’ve heard some recommend going as high as two grams but that is up to you. For example, if you weigh 150 lbs you’ll need 150 grams of protein per day.
This is a super tough one, as there are SO MANY great protein powders out there. However, protein powder won’t be a supplement that you can feel working, like you can with preworkouts or fat burners. Therefore, it kind of makes it tricky for me to go into an in-depth review over what to feel after you take a protein powder.
So, I do have a few brands that I think are personally worth checking out including Dymatize Elite Whey, AllMax IsoFlex, and Cellucor Performance Whey. The main key to picking out a good protein powder is choosing flavors that you enjoy. It is hard to go wrong with chocolate or cinnamon roll, as these seem to be the flavors I’ve enjoyed the most. Protein powder companies have come up with some wild flavors recently including birthday cake, cupcake, and even breakfast cereals.
